About Amha Ermias

Dr. Amha Ermias is a highly accomplished evaluator, policy analyst, and humanitarian expert with over 18 years of experience in monitoring, evaluation, accountability, and learning (MEAL). He has successfully led more than 120 evaluations, large-scale research studies, and capacity-building initiatives across Ethiopia, Tanzania, Somalia, and South Sudan, supporting major international organizations, including UNDP, UNICEF, UNHCR, ICRC, ILO, JICA, USAID, Save the Children, and Catholic Relief Services. As a lead evaluator and team leader, he has played a pivotal role in shaping policy and programmatic decisions through evidence-based assessments, including the Real-Time Review of the Ethiopian Joint Response (EJR) for the Dutch Relief Alliance, the Evaluation of the Research on Improving Systems in Education (RISE) for FCDO, and the Evaluation of the Agro Programme in Ethiopia for ICRC, as well as conducting capacity assessments for women-led advocacy organizations. An accredited Sphere and CHS-approved trainer, Dr. Amha has designed and facilitated numerous training programs on quality and accountability, strengthening institutional capacity in humanitarian standards, complaints handling mechanisms, and accountability to affected populations. Notably, he led both the first and second Sphere Training of Trainers (ToT) in Ethiopia and has facilitated more than 15 Sphere and CHS training sessions in the past two years.

Beyond his extensive work in MEAL and capacity building, Dr. Amha has contributed to key policy reforms for the Ethiopian government, including strategic education policy development for the Ministry of Education and JICA, pastoral and agro-pastoral policy recommendations for USAID/Mercy Corps, and policy frameworks for the Ministry of Agriculture. His expertise spans climate resilience, conflict sensitivity, food security, WASH, and humanitarian coordination, with a strong focus on the Humanitarian-Development-Peace (HDP) Nexus. As a Sphere-accredited trainer, he has led multiple Sphere ToT sessions, playing a critical role in advancing the localization of humanitarian standards in Ethiopia. Additionally, Dr. Amha is actively engaged in facilitating HDP Nexus reflection and learning events in Ethiopia and Kenya, ensuring that global humanitarian standards are adapted and effectively applied in local contexts.
