New Sphere e-learning course for humanitarian managers

The one-hour course works through real-life scenarios in various contexts and highlights some of the key features of the Sphere standards. It allows users to explore the versatility of the standards and how they can use them in different ways and different situations.

Developed by the Sphere Secretariat in collaboration with the Humanitarian Leadership Academy (HLA), the one-hour course is free of charge. There is no prerequisite to taking it.

The course is hosted on “kaya,” the HLA learning platform (you will need to create an account if you don’t have one already). It is available in English, Arabic, French and Spanish.

By the end of the course, users will be able to explain:

  • The Sphere rights-based approach to humanitarian response.
  • How Sphere standards are useful to preparing, managing and coordinating humanitarian response.
  • The benefits of using the Sphere standards to fulfil their organisation’s commitment to quality and accountability.
  • The first steps to disseminating Sphere within their organisations.
  • The course is aimed at senior managers involved in humanitarian action and working for organisations of all sizes, both national and international, as well as governmental agencies.

This includes, but it is not limited to:

  • Executive and deputy directors
  • Regional and country directors
  • Human resources directors
  • Heads of department for sectoral activities
  • Advocacy and Monitoring and Evaluation managers
  • Programme coordinators
  • Government officials at national and local level
  • Any senior manager willing to learn about Sphere
  • While designed primarily for these audiences, the course will be beneficial to anyone interested in getting a quick overview and refresher on Sphere.

How does this course relate to The Sphere Handbook in Action e-learning course?

Both courses complement each other. While Sphere for Managers gives a quick overview, The Sphere Handbook in Action offers a deeper exploration of the subject through a 15-hour study based on five fictional scenarios.
